Australian women retire with significantly less superannuation than men because they take career breaks and work part-time to care for children more frequently. Even when paid parental leave is offered, men historically have a low uptake of the benefit. To combat this, Viva Energy is the first company in Australia to introduce full-time 12% superannuation payment for all employees on parental leave and during part-time work periods, for up to five years from the child’s birth. This initiative makes taking a career break or working part-time while caring for children, more attractive to both men and women. Viva Energy has contributed over $1 million of additional superannuation to 83 eligible employees (62 of whom were female) since September 2017.
